Shopify Page Speed Checklist: What to Fix First
Slow pages lose visitors, especially on mobile, and they can hold back search visibility too. Most Shopify speed problems come from a short list of causes. Use this checklist and re-test after each change.
Measure first
Run your homepage, a collection page and a top product page through Google PageSpeed Insights. Note the mobile results, then re-run after each change so you know what actually helped.
Compress and resize images
Oversized images are the most common cause. Resize them to the largest size they are actually shown, use modern formats such as WebP where possible, and lazy-load images below the first screen.
Remove apps you do not need
Each installed app can add scripts to every page. Uninstall apps you no longer use and check that leftover code was removed from the theme. Keep only what earns its place.
Keep the first screen light
Avoid autoplay video, heavy sliders and large pop-ups at the top of the page. A single clear image and headline loads faster and converts better.
Limit fonts and third-party scripts
Use one or two font families and only the weights you need. Review tracking and chat scripts and remove duplicates.
Choose a lean theme and keep it tidy
A well-built, up-to-date theme with few customizations is usually faster than a heavily modified one. Remove unused sections and old code when you can.
Re-test on a real phone
Test over mobile data, not only office Wi-Fi. If the first screen shows quickly and the page stays stable while loading, you are on the right track.
Frequently asked questions
Does page speed affect Shopify sales?
Slow pages tend to lose visitors before they see the offer, so improving speed supports conversion. It is one factor among several, alongside offer, trust and product page quality.
Is a perfect PageSpeed score necessary?
No. Aim for fast real-world loading on mobile and a stable layout, not a perfect number.
