Shopify Abandoned Cart Emails: What to Send and When

Most people who add a product to the cart do not buy in that visit. A short, helpful email sequence is one of the lowest-cost ways to bring some of them back. This guide covers a simple three-email setup you can build in Shopify Email, Klaviyo or any email tool.

Why a sequence beats a single email

Shoppers leave carts for different reasons: they got distracted, wanted to compare, were unsure about shipping or just were not ready. One email cannot answer all of that. Two or three emails over a few days can.

Email 1: the reminder (about 1 hour later)

Keep it short and useful. Show the product image, name and price, and use one clear button back to the cart. A plain subject line such as "You left something in your cart" works. Add a line saying that your support team is happy to answer questions. Do not add a discount here, since many people simply got interrupted.

Email 2: answer the doubts (about 24 hours later)

This is where you handle the usual objections: shipping time and cost, returns, sizing, materials and how to contact you. Pull two or three real customer reviews into the email if you have them. A subject line like "Questions about your order?" fits the tone.

Email 3: the last nudge (about 72 hours later)

Remind them the items are not held for them, and, if your margins allow it, offer a small incentive such as free shipping or a modest discount. Use it only on this last email so you do not train customers to wait for a coupon.

What every email should include

The cart contents with images, one main button, your returns and shipping summary in a line, and an easy way to reply or contact support. Keep the design plain and the text mobile friendly, since most opens happen on a phone.

How to set it up

In Shopify, abandoned checkout emails can be turned on in the notification settings. If you use Klaviyo, use its abandoned cart (checkout started) flow, add the three emails with the delays above, and keep a smart filter so people who have already ordered are removed from the flow.

How to measure it

Track recovered revenue, the click rate on the cart button and the unsubscribe rate. Judge the sequence over a few weeks and a meaningful number of carts, then change one thing at a time, such as the subject line of email 1 or the timing of email 3.

Common mistakes

Sending the discount in the first email, writing long emails, forgetting to stop the flow after a purchase, ignoring consent rules for your country and sending a sequence with no clear sender name.

Frequently asked questions

When should the first abandoned cart email be sent?
A common starting point is around one hour after the cart is left. Test earlier and later timing on your own store before settling on one.

Should I offer a discount in abandoned cart emails?
Not in the first email. If you offer one, keep it for the last email and make sure your margins can handle it.

Can you set this up for my store?
Yes. Send your store link and I will include email notes in a short free written review.

Want your emails looked at?

I will send a short free written review of your store and email setup. No cost, no obligation.
